WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO STORE A MATTRESS?

Before storing your mattress, it’s important to clean it thoroughly. Make sure that all the dust and dirt that has built up over time has been vacuumed up so that your mattress doesn’t deteriorate in storage. If you’re storing your mattress long-term, it’s best to store it horizontally so that the internal springs keep their position and shape. Storing it on its side will maximise your storage space, however if your mattress is stored on its side for more than 12 hours, its shape and coils will not be kept intact and may ultimately damage the sleeper when used.

SHOULD I WRAP MY MATTRESS UP?

Yes you should. Wrapping it up in plastic is a good way to store it, however it should only be used in the case of short-term storage. To keep it wrapped up in plastic for more than 3 months would increase the chances of your mattress growing mould and fungi. It is more effective than cotton or flannel in keeping dust off, but try and find a solution that has a balance between breathability and protection. There are light and breathable plastic mattress covers for less than $30 that you can use to wrap or zip up your mattress in.

MY MATTRESS HAS AN ODOUR – IS THAT NORMAL?

After being put in storage for so long, it’s possible that the plastic covering may have altered the odour of the mattress, which is a common occurrence. If you were already thinking about replacing your mattress, you don’t need to worry about storing it or getting rid of the odour. However, there are ways of getting rid of it if you are willing to keep your mattress. Allow for the mattress to breathe for a little while after removing the plastic covering. Sprinkle baking powder onto the sides of the mattress and allow it to soak up the scent before vacuuming it up.

CAN I STORE MY MATTRESS IN A BASEMENT?

You can, however make sure that it is dry or there is a temperature regulator available for use. The dryness will help to combat any humidity that might occur with potential temperature fluctuations. Keeping your mattress in prime condition is essential and even using the breathable covers that keep dirt and other substances off it, there’s still a large chance of mould and mildew growing on your mattress in these types of conditions.

MY STORAGE UNIT DOESN’T HAVE CLIMATE CONTROL – WHAT SHOULD I DO?

It is an important criteria to look out for when you’re in the market for storage spaces. However, it isn’t essential to a storage space. You could purchase a portable dehumidifier which will take care of any excess moisture in the air of your storage space when you visit. You may also want to consider other storage units available with temperature control. Check out our spaces listed by renters in and around your local area and find the one perfect for your needs.

I BOUGHT A MATTRESS IN A BOX. HOW LONG CAN I LEAVE IT IN THE PACKAGING?

Mattress in a Box presents a new way of viewing mattresses. They arrive packaged up in a box which makes it a lot easier for you to store it and move it around the house, particularly if your room is upstairs. These mattresses are able to be stored within the box for up to a month, so if you decide to move houses or store household items for a short amount of time, you can keep it in its box and not have to worry about it losing its shape or any health issues associated with its support.
